The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding)

Home

33rd Foot raised in 1702 as Huntingdons Regiment, became the 1st Yorkshire West Riding in 1782. The 76thFoot raised in 1787 linked as 1st & 2nd Battalions in 1881.

Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington was a subaltern in the 76th in 1787 and in those days gentlemen purchased their commissions and moved regiment and rank as quickly as their finances would allow. He quickly became a Lieut. Colonel and a year after his death Queen Victoria granted the 33rd a second title , The Duke of Wellington's, in his honour. It is the only British Regiment to be named after a non royal, his crest is the regiments badge.

1881.07.01 The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)
organised as the county regiment of Yorkshire West Riding, encompassing its Militia and Volunteer infantry [see below] and uniting two regular battalions:
1st Battalion, redesignation of 33rd (Duke of Wellington's) Regiment of Foot
2nd Battalion, redesignation of 76th Regiment of Foot
